    10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

    #140RVW

Another day, another teen movie. But this one’s quite good, as it gives the teens depth & emotions, even if it does contain the usual stuff.

10 Things I Hate About You

    What’s more:

This may be a modern-set teen movie based on an old play and released 15 years ago, but the similarities with She’s All That end there. Mostly.

10 Things I Hate About You

An updated telling of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, which the title slightly hints at, 10 Things was penned by screenwriting partners Karen McCullah Lutz & Kirsten Smith inspired partly by something from Lutz’s high school diary, 10 Things I Hate About Anthony. Modernizing Shakespeare’s plays is a cottage industry at this point, and this version takes the basic structure and theme and then lays a teen comedy on top of it. But that’s fine.

10 Things I Hate About You

What raises this above standard teen fare is not the film’s roots in the play. It’s partly a success because the characters, while archetypes, aren’t caricatures, or at least not merely caricatures. Everyone comes with their own label, and it’s limiting, but most of the significant characters have more under the surface than their packaging.

10 Things I Hate About You

The main reason the picture works, though, is simply the talented young actors. Sure, they’re too old to play high schoolers, but that can be said of most of these films.

10 Things I Hate About You

Julia Stiles is particularly fine as Kat, an intelligent young woman with an edge that the filmmakers wisely chose not to blunt. She may have one of the best roles a teen protagonist got in the 1990’s.

10 Things I Hate About You

Heath Ledger oozes charisma, although his accent is poorly hidden. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is utterly charming as the smitten Cameron. Only the character of Bianca is under-written and Larisa Oleynik consequently doesn’t have much to do.

10 Things I Hate About You

David Krumholtz is at his best here. I love his shtick. And Allison Janney damn near steals the whole movie.

10 Things I Hate About You

Directed by first-timer Gil Junger, 10 Things isn’t brilliant or anything, but it’s a well-made, enjoyable coming of age comedy. It has pretty good acting, it’s funny and while it employs all of the teen comedy set pieces, it doesn’t feel enslaved by them.

    She’s All That (1999)

There’s practically no end of bad things about this movie, most of all the fact that I’ve seen it more than once. I’m a sucker for rom-coms.

    She's All That

    What’s more:

I appreciate “actors” like Matthew Lillard; they let you know right away which movies to avoid. He’s like the modern Louis Gossett, Jr.  If you want to find everything wrong with teen movies all at once…

    She's All That

God, this story is absolutely awful. How hard was this? It was a great play when it was Pygmalion, it was a better play when it was My Fair Lady. All you had to do was update slightly for the modern teen audience. Instead it was so badly botched that they had to hire M. Night Shyamalan to doctor the thing. It didn’t work.

If this story of mean rich teens wasn’t unlikable enough, they’ve cast it with actors who probably can’t even remember what high school was like, it was so long ago. And they cast TWO rappers – no movie can overcome that!

    She's All That

I don’t know who’s time is being most wasted here, Anna Paquin or Dulé Hill. This thing makes every wrong decision you can make. What a perfectly dreadful picture…

    Detroit Rock City (1999)

    #140RVW

Ill conceived vanity project for KISS (like they have any other kind). Unambitious “wild night out” movie unfunny with unlikable characters.

    Detroit Rock City

    What’s more:

Rock ‘n’ roll movies are seldom ever any good. Especially the ones that feature a real-life band. Only movies with fictitious bands are interesting or funny. If the film is based on a real band (and it isn’t a documentary, which can be great) the band has to have a sense of humor about themselves, which they never do.

What about The Beatles, you say? Well, The Beatles are the exception to most rules, anyway, but even then I’d argue that the reason A Hard Day’s Night and Help! work is because they have such a great sense of humor.

    Detroit Rock City

Treading the path forged by the equally lousy Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, Detroit Rock City follows four of the least likable burnouts in what are meant to be hilarious misadventures as they try to go see KISS at Cobo Hall in Detroit in 1978. Since KISS was involved, you can be sure that this will be humorless and brazenly self-serving , and it is.

    Detroit Rock City

This could maybe have been something, even if the concept is so blatantly unoriginal that executives should have balked early in the pitch process. If there was a sense of humor about the time or the band or the characters, this could have been a lighthearted coming of age romp. Not something we need another of, surely, but at least that would have been enjoyable to someone. As it is, I have no idea who this movie is made for. Since it isn’t a send-up, it seems aimed solely at those who were fans in 1978. Nostalgia only gets you so far.

    Detroit Rock City

Modern audiences may and do go see KISS when they come around for lots of reasons; some want to see what all the fuss is about, some think it’s funny, some love the timeless quality, some just like the music or the show. The band famously doesn’t care; all checks cash the same. But that doesn’t work for a movie; you aren’t seeing the spectacle, you aren’t experiencing the concert – just these four potheads going to see the concert. So it lives or dies by the actual story, and that’s not going to work – because it stinks.

    Detroit Rock City

The screenplay was written by Carl V. Dupré, who writes straight-to-video sequels to bad horror movies like Hellraiser and The Prophecy. He is way out of his depth if he’s going to try to make the characters interesting; perhaps he didn’t even try. The effect would be the same. What’s more curious is that it is directed by Adam Rifkin, who seems to be far more successful as a writer – you’d think he’d realize there was nothing here to work with.

KISS has always wanted us to believe that they were shocking and that people were morally outraged by their shtick.  Even when they came back in the 90’s they would insist that bible-thumping conservatives were banging the drums about the band being devil music. I never understood this and frankly never believed it for a second. They were on lunchboxes for crying out loud. These guys are the most blatant self-promoters in the history of ever and everyone can see that they were corporation first, band second. I simply refuse to believe that they were ever considered threatening by people who were not actively encouraged by raise an outcry by the band’s representatives. I’m sure some nutjobs went along for the ride – they always do. But the film tries to sing this old song again, and it’s silly.

    Detroit Rock City

    As for the performances:

    • Three of the four main actors, including Edward Furlong, lack charisma of any kind and are a chore to watch.
    • The fourth, Sam Huntington nearly makes up for the rest of them on his own. Huntington, who was only 17 here, absolutely steals the film, such as it is. Everything seems like background to him. Interestingly, ten years later he’d do the same thing in Fanboys, which is more or less the same movie but about Star Wars instead of KISS.
    • Melanie Lynskey is completely wasted as Beth, the girl next door type. (See what they did there? Because Beth is a famous KISS song. That’s how clever the writing is…)
    • Natasha Lyonne is similarly punching the clock as Christine (Sixteen? Seriously, too funny, guys…) the disco queen.
    • And then there’s KISS themselves. Twenty years have passed but we’re wearing makeup so no one can tell, right? WRONG…

    Three Kings (1999)

    #140RVW

Very original heist film, set in Gulf War, provides unique look at hard to pin down time in history. DP Sigel creates visual masterpiece…

    Three Kings

    What’s more:

The polarizing subject matter likely keeps people away from this one, which is entirely their own loss. Regardless of your feelings about the Gulf War, it remains a unique and interesting time, and this film may be the most original viewpoint on it. I personally don’t consider this to be a political or message-based war movie. I think there is something of great merit whether you supported the war or not; the movie may have a message, but it’s not a message movie.

    Three Kings

The premise is great; good enough that when writer/director/prima donna David O. Russell heard the idea for a story by John Ridley called “Spoils of War” about a Gulf War heist, he immediately sat down and wrote the story of Three Kings. Allegedly that’s all this movie has in common with Ridley’s story, but he still was given credit for coming up with the story. We’ll probably never know the full story.

But what a great setting. It can’t really be called a backdrop for the heist story; more of a character or even the story itself.

    Three Kings

The acting is excellent. Clooney had truly become a leading man with Out of Sight the year before, but he ups his game and turns in a great acting performance here. Marky Mark & Ice Cube are both surprisingly effective; probably the last time anyone looked at Wahlberg as an “aspiring” actor. But Spike Jonze is a revelation…

    Three Kings

The look of the film is its most unique feature. Cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel deserved an Oscar nod at least for a truly original picture. Shot on different stocks, including transparent, to replicate the look of the newspaper reporting of the war, he uses filters and color timing and a variety of techniques to keep up with the constantly changing moods and settings.

Great audio work here, as well, bringing a realism and grittiness while avoiding the usual war movie effects.

The cast is ridiculously talented, but didn’t even need to be with top of class writing from Kasdan. Very funny, lovely & sort of mellow…

    mumford_still_2

    What’s more:

No reason this movie isn’t as famous as like-minded dramadies like As Good As It Gets. That’s the closest comparison I can come up with for this one; a mix of really funny, biting humor and mildly schmaltzy feelings that somehow balance each other out nicely.

Should have been a launchpad for Loren Dean, but somehow it didn’t really happen. Lots of great character actors and tv-type talent abound. Zooey’s first movie. Hope Davis continues her great work. Jason Lee at his most charming (plus he skateboards).

But the star here is the script. It’s a slow burn of a movie, and that is a good thing; it really draws you in. Kasdan is in another league…
